Penn-Plax Aqua-Ponic Betta Fish Aquarium and Hydroponic Planter, 5.3 L

Penn-Plax Aqua-Ponic is a 1.4-gallon (5.3 L) fish tank and hydroponic planter that pairs an ultra-clear plastic aquarium with a plant pot above it.

• Fish-and-plant nutrient cycle — plant roots absorb fish waste as nourishment, helping clean the aquarium water.
• 1.4-gallon tank — accommodates 1–3 of the suggested fish types.
• Planter can also be used on its own — add your own nutrients when growing plants hydroponically.
• Ceramic planting media included — retains water and supports plant root growth.
• Compact round footprint — overall dimensions are 7.75 in (19.7 cm) in diameter by 10.25 in (26 cm) high.

The Aqua-Ponic combines a small aquarium and a plant-growing space for people who want to observe fish and plants together. It is designed around a natural nutrient exchange: fish waste nourishes the plant, while the plant helps clean the tank water. The planter can also be used separately for hydroponic growing with added nutrients.

How does the Aqua-Ponic fish-and-plant cycle work?

Fish waste in the tank provides nourishment that the plant absorbs through its roots, helping clean the water. The included ceramic media retains water and supports root growth, while the enclosed pot sits in the lid above the aquarium.

• To add water, water the plant as you would a potted plant.
• Place larger ceramic pieces at the bottom of the pot so smaller pieces do not fall into the aquarium.
• Side openings provide access for adding a pinch of fish food; any fish food can be used.

Which fish and plants suit this tank?

The 1.4-gallon Aqua-Ponic is suggested for 1–3 Betta fish, Bloodfin Tetras, White Cloud Minnows, Danios, or Guppies. Bettas need the water level lowered by 1 in (2.54 cm) to leave room to breathe at the surface.

Suggested plants include Peace Lily, Chinese Evergreen, Lucky Bamboo, English Ivy, Mint, Watercress, Chives, and leafy lettuce. Most indoor house plants and kitchen herbs are suitable for the planter, and established plants are recommended instead of starting from seed.

• Research a plant’s toxicity and nutritional needs before placing it above the tank, since fish may nibble on its roots.
• The plant is not a food source for fish; feed the fish separately and avoid overfeeding, which can cloud the water and harm both fish and plant.

What comes with the Penn-Plax Aqua-Ponic?

The set includes the plastic tank, a lid with an enclosed pot, and ceramic planting media. The tank is made from ultra-clear plastic, and the enclosed pot provides a place for a plant above the aquarium.

• Tank interior: 7.75 in (19.7 cm) diameter x 7.25 in (18.4 cm) high.
• Enclosed pot: 3.75 in (9.5 cm) diameter x 2.25 in (5.7 cm) high.
• Black base: 7.75 in (19.7 cm) diameter x 1.75 in (4.4 cm) high.

How much space does the tank need?

The assembled Aqua-Ponic measures 7.75 in (19.7 cm) in diameter and 10.25 in (26 cm) high. Compare these dimensions with your intended surface, and account for the plant sitting above the tank.

• The round base has a 7.75 in (19.7 cm) diameter.
• The tank interior is 7.25 in (18.4 cm) high, beneath the enclosed planter.

The Penn-Plax Aqua-Ponic is suited to fish keepers who want a compact aquarium paired with a plant-growing space, or growers who want to use the tank as a hydroponic planter with their own nutrients. It is intended for the suggested small fish selection and 1–3 fish, with a lower water level for Bettas. Its 1.4-gallon tank, enclosed pot, and ceramic planting media bring the fish-and-plant setup together.
