Riare Expanded Clay Balls, 4 lb for Reptile Terrariums, Porous Reusable Drainage Substrate

Riare Organic Expanded Clay Balls are a 4 lb (1.81 kg) clay substrate for reptile and bioactive terrariums, designed to create a draining false bottom and help retain moisture.

• 4 lb (1.81 kg) of expanded clay balls — provides substrate for terrariums, vivariums, and aquarium setups.
• Approximately 4–16 mm in diameter — supplies rounded pellets for a substrate or drainage layer.
• Porous, lightweight natural clay with a pH-neutral composition — supports airflow and moisture management in a tank.
• Rinse-clean and reusable — lets you clean the substrate rather than replace it frequently.
• Resealable foil pouch — keeps the remaining substrate stored between uses.

Terrarium setups need a base that can support drainage while helping maintain moisture around plants and other substrates. These expanded clay balls are made for tropical terrariums, palm tanks, and bioactive enclosures, as well as aquatic and planted setups where a porous clay medium is useful. Use them as a false bottom beneath coconut husk, moss, or another substrate, or as a plant-root medium.

What are Riare Expanded Clay Balls used for in a terrarium?

Riare Expanded Clay Balls can form a drainage layer or false bottom beneath the main terrarium substrate. Add water to the lower layer to create a natural aquifer that helps the enclosure retain moisture and supports healthy soil conditions. The porous pellets allow air to move through the layer, while their shape and light weight make them suitable for tropical terrariums and palm tanks.

• Use as a base beneath coconut husk, moss, or other terrarium substrates.
• Suitable for live-plant setups and autospray rearing chambers.
• Can also serve as a medium for plant root growth in a tank.

How do the clay balls support drainage and water management?

Riare Expanded Clay Balls provide a porous layer for drainage and water movement in a terrarium or bioactive aquarium. The natural clay is baked at high temperatures into rounded pellets, and the pH-neutral substrate can help reduce excess acidity. It can also retain moisture and nutrients, and is used as a soil alternative for water filtration.

• In a water layer, the balls can help create flowing water for a waterfall feature.
• In aquarium setups, they can help break down food residue and feces as part of tank filtration.
• The natural clay contains no dirt or debris.

Can Riare Expanded Clay Balls be cleaned and reused?

Yes. Riare Expanded Clay Balls can be rinsed under running water and reused, so they do not need frequent replacement. Their breathable structure is suited to extended use in vivariums and enclosures, and the pellets are made to withstand long-term wear. When you have finished using them, the degradable clay balls can be placed in a garden.

• Suitable for reptile, amphibian, and invertebrate enclosures.
• Can also be used in tube aquaponic gardening.
• The resealable pouch allows remaining substrate to be stored for later use.

These clay balls suit keepers building a moisture-retaining false bottom, a drainage layer, or a plant-friendly substrate base for a terrarium, vivarium, or aquarium setup. They are also useful for gardeners working with tube aquaponics. For a pet enclosure, they are intended as substrate or bedding material rather than a complete enclosure setup. Their porous natural-clay pellets can be rinsed and reused across suitable planting and enclosure applications.
