Aqueon SmartClean Power Filter is a large aquarium filter for 30–50 gallon (113.6–189.3 L) freshwater or saltwater tanks, designed to simplify partial water changes without removing the filter.

• Quiet operation — keeps filter noise low in your aquarium space.
• EcoRenew cartridge with carbon-infused fibers — helps remove pollutants, organic debris, and odor from aquarium water.
• Bio-Holster cartridge holder — provides space for beneficial bacteria that break down waste.
• NoDrip cartridge and holster design — helps limit spills during cartridge changes.
• Adjustable flow rate — lets you set the flow for a range of aquarium sizes.

Keeping an aquarium in good condition involves water changes as well as filtration. The SmartClean design is made for aquarists who want to perform partial changes with less mess and without taking the filter off the tank. It is suited to freshwater and saltwater setups in the stated tank-size range, with flow that can be adjusted to accommodate different aquariums.

How does the SmartClean filter make water changes easier?

SmartClean Technology lets you perform a partial water change without removing the filter. Lift and rotate the filter nozzle to change water with less splashing, so the filter can remain in place during this maintenance step. The cartridge and its holder also have a NoDrip design to help reduce water mess when changing cartridges.

• Partial water changes can be carried out with the filter still installed.
• The nozzle lifts and rotates for water changes.
• The cartridge and holder are designed to help limit spills during cartridge changes.

How do the EcoRenew cartridge and Bio-Holster filter aquarium water?

The included Aqueon EcoRenew cartridge uses carbon-infused fibers to remove pollutants, organic debris, and odor from the water. Its Bio-Holster holder provides a place for beneficial bacteria to grow; those bacteria break down waste as part of the filtration process.

The filter also has an auto-start pump, so priming is not required. If power is interrupted and then restored, the pump automatically restarts. These features combine cartridge-based filtration with a holder that supports beneficial bacteria, without adding a separate priming step when starting the pump.

• One Aqueon EcoRenew filter cartridge is included with the filter.
• The Bio-Holster holds the cartridge and provides space for beneficial bacteria.
• The pump starts without priming and restarts when interrupted power is restored.
