A dog bed is one of the few things your dog will use every single day, so it is worth choosing with care. The good news is that you do not need to be an expert: a tape measure, a little observation and a few questions about your home are enough to narrow the choice quickly.
1. Start by watching how your dog sleeps
Dogs tend to have a favourite sleeping position, and the best bed supports it.
- Curlers tuck their nose towards their tail. A round or oval bed with a raised rim, often called a bolster or donut bed, gives them something to lean against.
- Sprawlers stretch out flat on their side or even on their back. A rectangular mattress-style bed or a large flat cushion gives them room.
- Leaners like to rest their head on something. Look for a bed with one or more raised sides.
- Burrowers like to be covered. A hooded bed, a cave style or a bed with a blanket works well.
2. Measure your dog, then add room
Measure your dog from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while they are standing, then add roughly 10 to 20 centimetres. For curlers, check the inside dimension of the sleeping area, not just the outside measurement, because a raised rim takes up space. If your dog is still growing, buy for the size they will be, not the size they are now. Always compare your measurements with the dimensions given on the product page rather than relying on the words small, medium or large, because they vary from brand to brand.
3. Think about materials
- Filling: polyester fibre fill is soft and light, while foam gives a firmer, more supportive surface. Check the product description for the filling used.
- Cover fabric: soft plush looks cosy, while tightly woven fabrics are easier to brush clean. If your dog likes to dig, a robust fabric is a sensible choice.
- Base: a non-slip base helps the bed stay put on tiled or wooden floors.
4. Make washing easy
Any dog bed will need cleaning. A removable cover that you can machine wash saves a lot of effort, and so does a bed that fits in your washing machine. Check the care label for the recommended temperature before you buy, and keep a spare cover or blanket so there is always a clean one ready.
5. Pick the spot first
Dogs like to be near their people but out of the main path. A quiet corner of the living room, the end of the hallway or beside your own bed are common choices. Keep the bed away from direct draughts and away from radiators and heaters. If you plan to move the bed between rooms or take it in the car, a lighter bed with a carry handle is more practical.
6. A quick checklist
- Measured the dog and added room.
- Matched the shape to their usual sleeping position.
- Checked filling, cover fabric and base.
- Confirmed the cover is removable and washable.
- Chosen a quiet, draught-free spot.
